Position Summary

Registered Respiratory Therapist, Critical Care/Respirology Unit
Your goal in this position is to promote a patient and family centered care approach. You will do this by collaborating with an interdisciplinary team of care providers in a supportive and culturally sensitive manner. You have clinical expertise, competence, and technical skills as related to the position. You are also flexible to changing priorities and committed to continuous learning and professional development. You have great interpersonal skills, and you effortlessly connect with physicians, staff, patients, and families. You will take a leadership in advocating and providing exceptional health care to patients and families. This position supports the hospital’s academic mandate by advancing care through teaching and learning and/or transforming care through research and innovation. This position contributes to the shared responsibility of ensuring health and safety policies are followed to provide for a healthy environment for staff, physicians, volunteers, learners, patients and families.

On a practical level, you will

  • Participate collaboratively within interprofessional healthcare teams with adult, pediatric and newborn patients in the Critical Care Unit
  • Provide ventilation management, weaning and discontinuation
  • Perform as a member of Code Teams and Critical Care Response Team
  • Assist at high risk deliveries performing neonatal resuscitation
  • Perform airway management including intubations and tracheostomy tube insertions
  • Perform insertion of arterial lines
  • Administer pharmaceutical substances in respiratory care
  • Perform related diagnostic tests including procurement and interpretation of arterial blood gases, assisting with bronchoscopies
  • Supervise, teach and evaluate students as assigned by clinical coordinator
  • Educate patients, families, caregivers and health care professionals in respiratory care
  • Demonstrate the ability to lift and position patients and related equipment.

Qualifications

  • Diploma/Degree in Respiratory Therapy from an accredited institution
  • Registration with the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification, required
  • Current Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification, required
  • Current NRP certification, required
  • Experience in adult intubation and adult radial arterial line insertion
  • Membership with C.S.R.T. and R.T.S.O. preferred
  • Experience in neonatal intubation preferred
